Over his career, Mr. Lance has been responsible for hundreds of millions of dollars of investments. At Windjammer alone, he was directly involved in the making of 24 investments representing approximately $300 million of invested capital which over time have produced a weighted average cash-on-cash internal rate of return in excess of 30%.
Mr. Lance has served on various boards of directors, three times as Chairman, and has advised companies on matters such as management compensation, audit practices, mergers and acquisitions, risk management and financing strategies.
Mr. Lance has been a speaker at conferences such as the annual Private Equity Analyst Conference, the Association of Corporate Growth and Los Angeles Venture Association. Mr. Lance’s topics have ranged from financing trends and fundraising to acquisition strategies. Mr. Lance is also a regular speaker at Investors' Circle's national conferences on investing for a sustainable future.
Tom Balderston has been building and managing venture capital portfolios for more than 25 years, as a general partner, limited partner and angel investor in companies and funds.
Tom formed Balderston Capital, Radnor, PA, in 2001, and has a focus on angel and early stage investments in emerging companies in the environmental and social impact space. He is on the Board of Investors Circle, a national angel network of socially responsible investors, www.investorscircle.net, and is a partner in its affiliated angel funds, the Patient Capital Collaborative, www.sustainvc.com. In addition to investing in and advising companies, he has invested in, and advised venture and private equity funds.
Tom also served from July 2006 to June 2009 as President and CEO of the Mid-Atlantic Capital Alliance, (now called Greater Philadelphia Alliance for Capital and Technologies), www.philadelphiapact.com, the regional venture community association in the Greater Philadelphia area.
Prior to founding Balderston Capital, Tom was President of SGI Capital, the private equity investment unit of Superior Group, a family-owned holding company. Balderston also worked with TDH Group from 1985-1998 where he was a General Partner of its TDH III, L.P. venture fund and Co-founder of its management company. After graduating from Williams in 1978, Tom worked for Bank of Boston, in middle-market lending first in Boston and then in Los Angeles.
Balderston holds an M.B.A. from the UCLA Graduate School of Management with a concentration in Finance and a B.A. from Williams College.
He serves on numerous private company Boards and fund advisory committees and is active on a number of community Boards as well. Currently, in addition to Investors Circle, he is on the Board and committees of the Ben Franklin Technology Center of Southeastern PA and is a 2012 appointee by PA Governor Corbett to the Ben Franklin Technology Development Authority, the Pennsylvania state-wide authority which oversees the Ben Franklin program. Tom has been an active volunteer at Williams College, most recently serving on its Board of Trustees from 2010 - 2012.
Tom and his wife Betsy have three very large adult sons and live in Ardmore, PA.
